An enormously disturbing and brave memoir. Not for the weak of heart. More triggers than I can mention. I barely got through it. Really wanted to know how things ended for Ms. Wariner and uhm, the end doesn't pull any punches. Really difficult book beautifully told.

A medium-paced memoir that’s emotional and reflective about a woman who grew up in an abusive polygamist Mormon family and how she escaped. A difficult but fascinating read.
I want to beat the shit out of so many people.
The Sound of Gravel is the true story of Ruth Wariner, one of her father’s 42 children. This follows her life as she and her siblings grow up in a religious polygamist ‘cult’ in Mexico.
This was just so disturbing. Poor, poor babies. I like to read memoirs like this because I think it’s so important for us to bear witness to these horrible actions that happen around us every day. All the adults that allowed these horrors to happen to children. Ugh!!!!!! This was so devastating and heart-breaking. I audibly gasped out loud at some points.
The resilience of Ruth and her siblings is just… there’s no words honestly. Wow.
I would highly recommend this if you liked Educated by Tara Westover, and vice-versa.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. It's always troubling when you read nonfiction and the "characters" don't really change or improve despite everything unraveling around them. My heart went out to the author and her siblings, however.
Like Angela's ashes, I devoured her frighteningly impoverished upbringing only because I knew she survived to write about it. Well done Ruth. What strength you have.

A heartbreaking look into the impact religious fundamentalism has on one family. Similar in themes to Educated by Tara Westover, this book is an uncomfortable read but I'm glad Wariner was able to tell her story.

What an amazing story. This memoir is inspiring, uplifting, heart wrenching, and so well told that it reads like a novel.
