I liked it, overall a very bleak and sad depiction of America in the post war period. Some stories were a lot better than others, with a few falling a bit flat for me. The last one was great, with the final pages really tying the entire book and its messages together. ‘No pain whatsoever’, ‘the B.A.R man’ and ‘a really good jazz piano’ were more standouts. Overall, it was good with nothing particularly bad to say, just not hugely standout.

I found all eleven stories here to be compelling. They were like little glimpses into a lot of his subsequent novels, and read easily. Would highly recommend!

I should've known that Yates and a title like this would ruin me. If it's possible to "show not tell" unexpressed emotion, he's done it yet again.
