Just baffling that with such an interesting premise Dick decided to squander it into a melodramatic love triangle with unlikeable characters that has little to do with the setting.

despite its lack of masterly grace, it is a much stronger start to pkd's project than the cries of boredom goodreads saddles it with.
as a neurotic myself, it is hard to know how much of pkd's expanded, elaborated nueroticism speaks to the human condition. but i've met some people, and it feels like even if this level of neurosis is peripheral, it is a valuable periphery to explore. i would hazard a guess that is not so peripheral as some would wish.

Philip K Dick's debut novel is a bit dull unfortunately. Probably why it remained unpublished during his lifetime. Wouldn't recommend. 2.5 stars.

An early view of the master before he became the master.

Not good. Not good at all. Wonder if PKD had met a woman yet when he wrote this. No agency, acted either silly, transparently manipulative, given over easily to others lust, had uncontrollable lust herself. Very weird.

I'm giving myself permission to stop reading this one at page 24. I'm finding it completely flat and uninviting. The characters are boring me, the dialogue is amateurish and tedious. Time to move on to something else.

I've got so many other interesting books on my reading list, this one can go back to the library.

It appears there's a reason PKD never sought to have this published during his lifetime. This will interest completists such as myself; someone looking to delve into Dick's work would be better served elsewhere.

Undeniably ambitious, but that is part of the problem - there's simply no way Dick was ready to tackle a project like this so early in his career. The fact that the main women in the cast are both malevolent, predatory sorts out to ensnare men to fit their inscrutable sexual appetites showcases an unappealing streak of misogyny which would crop up again and again over Dick's career. Very much unlike Philip Dick's other content, as it deals with more of an "alternate present" than a future or future concerns. Very much rooted in the mundane, heavily reliant on flashback which is difficult to piece together at times. Much more a poetic read than other work.

Much better than should be expected. The early elements of many PKD themes are here, in a book which is said to be his earliest surviving novel. For a fan, like myself, who has read the majority of the novels, I would highly recommend this one. However, I might be an outlier as I have really enjoyed several of his non-science fiction novels
