Anzac's Long Shadow: The Cost of Our National Obsession by James Brown

This was a very insightful look into how Australia's military history and stories of the past effect our military today.
It is interesting to see the author point out how something as critical as our current military is neglected by governments and people alike. And how in fervently following ANZAC's past has neglected the people who are its future, and those who are currently serving in our military.
Leaves a lot of questions about how education has left Australia's ignorant of contemporary warfare, and what our military personnel have achieved in recent times.

This is a super interesting investigation into the development of ANZAC mythology in Australia, and the role that this mythology plays in current thinking about the military. Brown is fairly scathing, and with good reason, about the deification of ANZACs and the lack of understanding and critical thinking about Australia’s current military involvement, and the treatment of recent veterans. A compelling and critically challenging read.
