3.5 stars. Witchy, magical, mysterious. Tea is a disgraced bone witch who is busy raising an army of dead monsters while she tells her life's story to a "bard." Her story is sad and lonely. She is forced to leave her family (after accidentally resurrecting her dead brother at his funeral) and complete her witchy training in a geisha-style environment. The pressure is on because bone Witches have an important job to do (slay monsters), there are only two of them left in the world, and the other one (her teacher and mentor) is slowly dying.

This first novel (of 3) builds a lot of suspense because we KNOW some major shit happened that resulted in Tea's exile, but we don't know what it is. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, with some big secrets being dropped right at the end, so of course I've got to continue the series to see what happened to the kind and handsome prince. And what sort of revenge she's planning with her puppy-like pet monsters.

I listened to the audiobook in all in one sitting today and I can’t remember most of the story. It was fun while I was listening, but I’m probably not going to continue the story.

I read this book many moons ago and decided to reimmerse myself in this series via audiobook. It was a completely different but amazing experience. Rin crafts such a rich and vibrant world, you feel like you could step foot in an ashka. The different narrators helped seperate the story lines for me and I just couldn’t put it down once Tea’s training took off. Buying book two immediately

It took me so so long to finish. It had potential…but the way it was written just didn’t do it for me. Some of it intrigued me, but some of the plot points were muddy and confusing. Though you get the gist of it, there were still unanswered questions, and not the type you should have.

For my personal taste it was okay, if you enjoy a slow read, you’ll probably like this book. I typically enjoy a page turner with a lot of world building. There was some excitement at the end but it just felt a bit drawn out.
