En ganska intetsägande bok, det hände liksom inte så mycket.

Please, don't judge me. Remote work is not leaving me with a lot of energy to read anything too challenging, or that I care about.

To my surprise, this one was an improvement, to be honest. I found the section in the mine particularly affecting, and there was a moment at the end that was genuinely scary, plus the whole novel made for some amusing recapping.

Minor spoilers might appear.

The 6th book, Den Onde Arv ('Evil Inheritance') is the first one that really breaks my heart.

The book is split into two; the first part is about Tarald and Sunniva's son, Kolgrim, as well as Tarald and Yrja's son Matthias. The curse has marked Kolgrim and despite looking a lot like Tengel, he completely lacks compassion or the will to do good things for others. Little things result in his evil tendencies to break out completely, changing not only his own life, but that of everyone in the family.

This is the part that always breaks my heart. Because despite being evil, despite doing some horrible things - for his own gain, unlike his grandmother Sol, who might have done some terrible things as well, but not out of an evil will - and despite his complete lack of understanding for other people's feelings, I don't hate Kolgrim. I feel sorry for him. So sorry for him. And at the end of his story, I always feel saddened.

I care a lot about the first part of the book, but the second half bores me. This part follows the other side of Dag and Liv's family line. Cecilie and Alexander's daughter Gabriella comes to Norway after a broken engangement and although I feel a lot of sympahy for her, I also feel like most of this part of the book is unnecessary. It still manages to break my heart though. Because if there was ever a fictional character that I identified with, if there was ever a character whose thoughts and emotions I could rleate to without any effort, it is Gabriella Paladin. And maybe that's also part of the reason why I feel a bit apprehensive about this part of the book. It hits too close to home.

Not to say that the second half of the book is a complete waste of reading time. It is good and very important things do happen. It's just that in the grand scheme of things, I still doubt if it really needed to be a whole "second part" and not just told inbetween the other story - not that it would have made sense, as they take place years apart.

I get hung up on the way Sandemo describes the nature's sounds, the wind through the trees and the waters. It's stunning in its simplicity and still very effective. Once again, I just can't help but love it.

In the end, I land on 4 stars, which is my overall rating of the book, as well as each part on its own. Which isn't really a statement as to me not loving this book. It's the kind of book that breaks your heart, yet you still love it for some reason, whether you can explain it or not.

This was fully like 2 different books in 1, and I liked the second half much more even though I hated the main romance. This series is just so completely bonkers that I can't help but love the books even when I don't like relationships or characters in them. Very much VC Andrews levels of unhinged (without the incest).
