The idea was great but the execution was 😬
adventurous challenging dark emotional lighthearted reflective sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

This was so much more than I expected. This book was filled with emotional turmoil and it approached quite a few delicate topics. With talk of addiction, poverty and sexual assault, Voyeur provided a mature read, and i’m not talking just about the smut.

3.5/5 stars

Going into this book, I was so excited because 1) THIS COVER 2) the hype surrounding it from one of my favourite romance readers who recommended it in a video.

This was so entertaining and I seriously loved it at the start. Once we got to about the 50% mark.. I got so annoyed with Callum. When the book first started, from his very first chapter POV, I was like.. this is a new fave hero of mine. That changed real quick when he turned into a jealous, possessive asshole. I get his reasons for being this way and he is a very broken man, but it just didn't sit right with me. Him shaming Oak for working at Voyeur when they started getting together was a big no from me. They met there, yet you're going to shame her.. NO SIRRR.

I loved Oaklyns character, she was so strong and a really hard worker for her age. She was doing the most to get herself through school, and I applauded her for that. The way she was so sweet with Cal after she found out the reasons for his hesitations made me want to cry, she was so attentive. She was definitely one of my fave parts of this book, along with the Voyeur club aspect. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the club, and the smut was off the CHARTS.

This book was a super fun read regardless of my complaints, and also heartbreaking at some points.

Am I the only person who did not enjoy this book?

I honestly thought I would fall in love with this book because while I had always been interested in student-teacher tropes, I never really read one, until I stumbled upon Voyeur.

I felt a huge disconnect from Callum and Oaklyn. Not only that, but honestly I was kind of creeped out in the beginning of the book with Callum. From the moment he saw her, everything felt insta-lust like he couldn't breathe without having her around.

Everything just felt off. I think this book had a lot going for it, with tropes you don't usually see in romance novels– age gap, student-teacher, (taboo topic like: voyeurism & a traumatic past) But I just did not feel the emotional connection they had with each other, I mean sure, the lust and sexual tension was there, but it didn't feel like anything more.

When I was reading the book, I didn't find myself rooting for the two of them because I just felt disconnected from their relationship. I didn't get to see them fall in love, and whenever they would be honest about their emotions, things just kept going wrong.

It felt too much of a push-and-pull, like both of them couldn't stand to be apart from one other, yet it always kept happening. Callum, because he's too afraid to let go and share his past with Oaklyn, and Oaklyn because she felt too prideful pressured to have everything done under her own terms.

SpoilerI hated how unrealistic everything felt. With Olivia only appearing when the story needed an extra character, Sharron was a plot point to expound on Callum's past, Jackson who I thought was going to be a love triangle was there only for a distraction. And not to talk about how a student-teacher trope that didn't eventually lead into faculty finding out? Plus, everyone who ended up knowing about their relationship was like totally okay about it? With no rational responses. I am utterly confused.

Each to their own as I would say. I think this book just wasn't my cup of tea.
