I enjoyed this from start to finish. It piqued my interest within the few minutes of listening and kept me engaged the whole way through. As someone who works in education and neurodivergent students, it was refreshing and genuinely intriguing to briefly see things from the perspective of someone on the Autism spectrum. The way she thinks and speaks constantly made me consider all the ways people on the spectrum get misunderstood and all the ways neurotypical people project their expectations onto others. The ending was quite satisfying for me…although I only spent a short amount of time with this character, I smiled and rooted for her future success. This was a pleasant read and I would recommend it to anyone interested in a perspective shift when it comes to how we perceive disability.

This is a comic and unsettling look at how modern society still strives for conformity, regardless of lip-service paid to the ideas of personal liberty and “being oneself.”

A few scenes were very disquieting, such as when the main character describes violent impulses she represses, or when the very thin margin of her acceptance by her circle of friends is threatened by their unthinking adherence to traditional gender roles.

Holy cow, what a read. I picked up this book and was sucked in from the first description of the protagonist's childhood. This story is not just about working at a convenience store: it's a critique of society, how society treats those deemed neurodivergent or outside the norm, how society treats women, and other messy feelings. I was utterly engrossed by Sayaka Murata's writing and couldn't put the book down. Sometimes, life is not about other people's expectations, but finding the place where you belong and that feels true to you... even if that place is a convenience store.
