At first I gave this two stars but perhaps was judging it too harshly. This book reworks the information laid out in the excellent Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense for a dynamic between people with authority (parents) and people without (kids) and stresses over and over that it is the responsibility of the parent, the one with the authority, to maintain control of the conversation. It's an important point and one easily forgotten in the moment, but the book itself could have been added as a chapter-or-two update to the original; it doesn't quite support a book on its own.

Then again, parents are busy and might not read a book on general communication just to get to the part where kids are concerned, and so this is probably the better way to go if you want to teach a parent something.

With a teenager in the house, it's helpful to be reminded at times that gentle communication actually works :)
