— since i surprisingly loved six of crows i did expect to love crooked kingdom just as much, if not more. but much like six of crows it had a painfully slow start and unfortunately, i couldn’t bring myself to care enough about the plot and instead ended up focusing all my attention on the character arcs and dynamics, their development as well as their relationships, which is why i ultimately prefer the s&b trilogy over this duology, because i actually care about both plot and characters (sorry besties please don’t cancel me)

that being said i do love leigh’s writing style in this, like i said all the characters have such specific traits that make them either 0 or 100% lovable. i also loved all of the original characters’ appearances and sobbed like a little bitch when matthias died, so that’s that!

final thoughts are:
- fuck pekka rollins
- i am still, 101% willing to die for my baby wylan, he could light me on fire and i’d still apologize to him
- leigh killing off matthias when he was becoming one of my favorites was so mean of her
- fuck pekka rollins
- i’m so glad (most) of the characters got their happy ending, it was so heartwarming and nice to see <3
- crooked kingdom is most likely a grower, so i’m excited to see my perspective on both this book and the previous one changing in future rereads
- fuck pekka rollings omg i hate him

“Maybe there were people who lived those lives. Maybe
this girl was one of them. But what about the rest of us?
What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible
girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns.
We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was
how you survived when you weren’t chosen, when there
was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed
you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.”

Thank goodness this is a duology because I couldn't wait a year for a third book. Other than one glaring tragedy, Bardugo wrapped up things nicely with Crooked Kingdom, and maybe it's best to leave well enough alone. However, a spinoff with Nina would be welcome! Crooked Kingdom lived up to its predecessor and I couldn't put it down until I knew how things played out with the crew from Ketterdam. Bardugo was fantastic at keeping me on my toes, and just when I thought all hope was lost she'd turn things around. The complexity of this story, this world, and these characters comes together to make a fantastic whirlwind of a ride for the reader.

Inspired

Honestly, I can't recommend this book (and its predecessor, "Six of Crows") enough. Basically once a chapter, I was messaging quotes to my friends, yelling about how good the writing was and how complete the characterizations. Honestly, if you love a good, down-and-dirty fantasy that will also have your heart racing, keep you guessing, and wring emotions from you in the middle of the night because you can't put it down long enough to sleep, this is the book for you.

I loved this book so much that I dint even know where to start with this review. The thing that I loved most was the way that everything clicked together in the end in a way that I hadn't begun to suspect. Typically, I at least have a guess that turns out to be somewhat accurate, but Kaz is so smart and so prepared that I never saw anything coming. I loved the way all of Kaz's different plots fit together like puzzle pieces in the end, and how he was a,ways two steps ahead of anything I or any of the other characters had even begun to consider. There was a lot more romance in this second book compared to the first one, but I liked that it was complimentary to the plot, not made into the main storyline. We got to see all of the relationships develop from multiple perspectives. While the many perspectives made the plot switch back and forth a lot, I enjoyed that it gave a view into the different cultures that we have never seen before in this world. The diversity in the main characters provided a lot of contrast to the Ravkan focus of the first trilogy, providing a lot more insight into the Suli and Fjerdan cultures, and more. Mostly, I liked that everything was tied up nicely at the end, leaving no plot lines that I can think of left open. My only complaints are that I would have liked to see the relationship between Inej and Kaz developed more, and I also wanted to see more of how Nina adjusted to her newfound powers and use them more, as well as the other Grisha's reactions to it.
