Non lo spegni, il mare, quando brucia nella notte.
La locanda Almayer, un luogo ai confini del mare: un luogo sospeso, fuori dal tempo, fuori dalla logica e dalle regole comuni. Luogo dove convergono tutti i personaggi della vicenda: Elisewin e Padre Pluche, Bartleboom, Plasson, Madame Deverià, il misteriosissimo Adams. Tutti alla ricerca di qualcosa, di una fine, di una persona, di un quadro, di una guarigione.
E poi la storia, apparentemente slegata da tutto, di un terribile naufragio e di una zattera alla deriva in mezzo al mare.
L'incontro di questi elementi e, soprattutto, di questi personaggi, dà vita a questo splendido racconto a cui fa da sfondo il mare. Il mare, infinito, irraggiungibile, salvifico, temibile, pericoloso, invitante.
Come sempre Baricco mi incanta. C'è da dire che questo libro mi ha lasciata un po' dubbiosa e delusa in alcuni passaggi un po' artificiosi, forzati, che sembrano messi lì solo per esibire la splendida prosa dell'autore. Ma per il resto è comunque un bellissimo romanzo, intenso, spettacolare.
E come sempre, quello che più mi colpisce nei racconti di Baricco sono i personaggi: sempre strani, improbabili, surreali ma assolutamente adorabili fino alla loro ultima, stranissima, peculiarità.

This is the rare occurrence where style over substance is a worthy trade off. I think this author could write an instruction manual and he'd still manage to inject it with such stirring fluent prose that I'd give it 5 stars.
That being said, while the style is what won me over, there is still substance here. Intriguing and convincing characters I was sad to leave at the end of the book. An enchanting setting at a forgotten inn on the oceanfront.

Iniziato sotto l'ombrellone, ho simpatizzato con chi voleva misurare il mare, anche se secondo me le onde non se ne vanno sconfitte.
Lo stile è decisamente poetico, metaforico, troppo per quello che stavo cercando.
