What a strange little book that examines our relationships with food and the connection that food can bring with others. I’m not sure who I would recommend it too. Maybe someone who loves baking and a bit of magical realism.

At first I thought this book would be some sort of lesson about the dangers of technology or how the tech start up lifestyle is harmful, or just a love letter to San Francisco, or even an updated "Under the Tuscan Sun".

I did not really expect the ending and I feel like it was rather rushed. I would have liked to see this fleshed out a bit more.

I adored this book! It was a perfect summer read and a delightful new story from the beloved author of my favourite book. However, the ending felt so rushed, I want more of The Starter's fate and the romance!

The beginning of the book was excellent! I absolutely LOVED everything that was written. But then the second half came along and it felt like I was waddling through mud. The ending did take me by surprise but I think the second half could have done better.

Fairly fun read to turn your brain off for. But the author lacks a cohesive idea. There are parts where it touches on automation versus human effort But it refuses to commit to either idea. It has places where it looks at being different for the sake of being different versus finding something better and unique but doesn't make a point. Another 100 pages to better flesh out the climax and commit to what the story is about would have been good.

This one is one of my new favorites! I had heard a lot about Sourdough and how it was a book with an interesting twist, which it certainly was. The book starts off pretty calmly, with a woman named Lois inheriting a sourdough starter from a pair of brothers. Throughout the course of the novel, we find Lois learning how to bake (with this interesting starter), leaving her job, finding a new job, finding confidence in herself, and finding love. For a short-ish novel, this book packs a punch. I think while at first the singing starter made me think I wouldn't like this novel in the end, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Sloan for sure knows how to create a world within an already well-known world and fills it with tons of interesting characters. The plot changed rather quickly which also made it engaging enough for me to keep going with it, even when I was unsure if I'd like it. I think my favorite part of this was following Lois as she became more confident in herself and started to realize what her calling is. She took a lot of risks in this story and it was fun to live vicariously through her as she figured things out.
