Imagine you and your friends are asked to join a computer game called, G.O.D. If you do what the game asks, you are rewarded. If you refuse, you are punished. But its just a game, right? This is what the friends thought until things started happening in real life. How safe is this game, really?
This book is a very interesting look into AI. I didn't realize until I read the author's bio that he is a lawyer and expert on AI. The knowledge showed in the book, but it was told in easy to understand terms. I am not extremely familiar with AI, but I did not have any difficulty keeping up. The story is told from the views of a group of teenagers and it brought out very interesting questions. Without giving too much away, the teenagers are asked to preform tasks and either be rewarded or suffer the consequences. It was interesting to think what I would do if I was in the same situation.
The book is quite lengthy but don't let that deter you. It is an excellent book. It does have some strong language so be aware if a younger reader was going to read the book or if you do not like strong language. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in AI and complex/intriguing plots. I gave this book 4 stars because there is a lot going on in this book with multiple story lines and at times, it is hard to follow. It did not take me long to catch up when I was lost but I did have to make an effort to keep the characters straight.

This book is phenomenal! Even if weird sci if isn’t normally your jam, this is well worth the step out of your comfort zone.
It’s centers around a group of high school seniors, collectively known as the Vindicators, who get invited to play the mysterious GOD Game. But is it really a game? How deep will they go? And how much collateral damage will pile up in the process?
I loved basically everything about this. The characters, the Vindicators themselves, wow. Each one so well fleshed out, you really feel like you’re apart of this group after awhile. Charlie was a great leader of the group and was so nuanced, damn I loved his personal journey throughout. The world building, another huge plus and something I got super submersed in. The inner workings of this game and the whole world itself, so super interesting and well thought out.
5/5 go read this one, check it out. Highly recommended!

As soon as I read the summary for this book, I knew that I would love it. It reminds me a lot of the movie Nerve, which is one of my favorites. I love how all of the characters have major flaws, just like actual people. I hope to read more by this author soon.

The God Game by Danny Tobey was a dark and twisted look via a virtual world that becomes reality. Charlie and his technology loving friends (The Vindicators) find their way to the G.O.D. Game. It appears to involve an AI-based character named God. Things seem innocent and fun enough, as they opt in, but things quickly go in a very different direction. The game knows the Vindicators darkest secrets and deepest desires. In the name of the game and in exchange for real life outcomes, the games puts challenges in front of players with high risk and a potential high reward. This book is full of all the ethical dilemmas as each character has to decide how they're going to play the game. What is worth doing if there's a personal reward? Is it worth hurting someone else for the gain of you, especially if they never know? Y'all this had the best and darkest dystopian and Black Mirror-esque vibes. There was so much happening as each character made choices in the game that had some real outcomes. I was captivated by this one throughout. This is a book that raises real questions about how we engage with technology, what we're willing to do to get ahead, as well as how we're willing to ignore consequences. This kept me reading late into the night (and during the day) as I had to what was going to happen in the game next. Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the early look at this January 2020 release. This is one that you're going to want to say yes to, so you can go through all the twisty thrills in this game. Also, selfishly I need people to read it because I want to talk about all the drama and all that went down.

Is this a YA novel? It sure feels like it. It’s like Ready Player One, but it’s set in high school, and there are 5,000 fewer 80s references. This is a book for nerds though. It’s got plenty of computer and internet references to please anyone who likes that kind of stuff. Lots of AI and virtual reality stuff mixed in with some fantasy elements. Also, lots of teen high school stereotypes and relationships. Popular kids, nerds, jocks, all of that. It also is weighed down like that wallflower book with too much depressing stuff. Anything bad that could happen in someone’s life has happened to at least one of the kids in this book. Or adults, too, I guess.
Where this book really takes a step forward though is when it uses the idea of God being an AI created thing to ask deeper philosophical questions. It doesn’t really happen until later, but I found myself interested in what is was trying to say about fate and destiny, God, people, and all of those things. It doesn’t dig deep, but it added a nice layer to the story.
This book is light and breezy, doesn’t require too much attention, and it’s fun enough to keep you invested in the story. It’s got a little too much teen melodrama that I didn’t ask for, but it’s got enough charm and substance to earn a three star rating.
