Hard to believe this is a translation, it’s so well translated. It took me a while to get into the characters (all the characters really with their strange names) however, once into the second half, I did enjoy this unusual book and it was a satisfying read.

a strange, fascinating book, 3.5

i don't have much to say about this book.

it was only halfway into this book that i actually started to care about it. the first half was boring (i was close to dnfing it) and the very slow pacing didn't do it for me.

however, i read the second half in one sitting. it started to interest me (although i can't pinpoint what exactly) and i did not expect the plot twist! though after it was revealed, i couldn't help but see how obvious it is and how oblivious i am to the foreshadowing. (i'm really shit when it comes to murder mysteries/thrillers) still, a good twist.

the philosophies in this book were compelling, but i felt disinterested throughout most of it. i did like the way this book depicted the relationship between animals and mankind. however, whenever the descriptions of astrology were mentioned, i skimmed through them. i did not care about them.

wasn't really attached to the characters, but i liked them! they were rememberable and important; i really liked their distinctive personalities and traits. and i really liked janina's pov, it's exceptionally rare when an old woman is the main character and i really enjoying reading through her.

i really loved the writing; simple and elegant, though it did feel heavy at times. honestly, i would've rated this a 4 stars, but i can't push aside that it truly bored me at times.

nevertheless, a very good book!
