Boring and I didn't like anyone. Jane's ridiculous guilt, Duncan's feckless behavior, Aggie's controlling attitude, Gary's cartoon-like list of likes/dislikes, Frieda is basically just a mandolin, Frieda's husband doesn't have any personality...

An enjoyable light novel about a sort of found-family in small-town Michigan. Warm, witty, charming.

Please take this review with a grain of salt because this is 1,000% not my kind of book.
This was by far one of the most painful books I have ever read. The characters suck, her life is boring, and I can’t imagine why anyone would want to read this dull pierce of “literature”. I read some reviews calling this “cozy” and “comforting”, but I truly don’t see it. All I could think was wow this woman’s life sucks. It genuinely made me depressed reading it.
Her boyfriend can’t commit AND has slept with (almost) every woman in town. Her mother is an asshole who kills someone, leaving the main character to take care of Jimmy. The main character strings along a decent guy, almost getting to the alter, and then strings him along some more before finally calling the whole thing off and showing no remorse what so ever. Then proceeds to get back together with the boyfriend who can’t commit. That’s finally where I had to call it quits!! Her life was too fucking depressing to continue reading.
Every single one the characters in this book has a pretty big character flaw. Duncan can’t commit, her mother is a self-centered asshole, jimmy and Gary are basically the same character, Duncan’s ex is a busybody, etc. I genuinely don’t like a single character, not even the narrator.
I just can’t fathom why someone would write a book with horrible characters that are both boring and shitty, about a small town where literally nothing happens. Like I said, this is NOT my genre, so it might just be a me issue, but holy fuck this book sucked.

Really enjoyed this book, it's a really sweet story of small town USA family life, Jane arrives in town and is locked out in her PJ's when she is rescued by local carpenter/handyman Duncan and they immediately start 'dating'. From this funny beginning you know you are in good hands, what follows is a collection of interesting 'characters' often only to be found in small towns. Jane is the narrator and sometimes a bit snarky, she is also witty, bringing charm and joy to the telling of her life. Tragedy changes her live in ways she can't believe and occasionally can't manage, whilst also recognising that she wouldn't be the same had this not happened. The descriptive writing, helps you see every interaction, smell every meal, hear every barb and shows why some people really enjoy small town living. The sense of community is palpable. Wonderfully written this is a gentle tale told so well, you won't be able to put it down.
