Wise, warm, sad, touching, witty, and bittersweet. The novel is broken into seven parts, from 2002 untill 2019. Every part has its own drama and of course, comedy. If you need a break from murder/dark story, this will suit for you to give a shot. Even if I still couldn't understand how can someone just get to know for less than 24 hours suddenly make love. HOW CAN IT BE????? IT JUST FEELS UNREALISTIC AND SEEMS OBVIOUSLY MADE UP.

After all, I loved the dialogue, the relationships, and the humour, AND THE DETAILS!. How author gave the detail what Jane endured when pregnant untill labour felt has a deep research. Also, I can feel how it to be mother who has sibling children. Challenging and tought.

But there's one character I love the most, is Jimmy!!!! I think every single person who read will love Jimmy for sure. THE ENDING SO FEELS PERFECT. JUST PERFECT. <3

Oh how I love this book, it gave me all the warm & fuzzies! At its heart, it is about family, and not necessarily of the conventional kind. It’s about obligation, the pressures we put on ourselves to do the right thing (which might not always be the right thing for us) and just how hard relationships can be.

Katherine Heiny is so insightful. You’ll read the book thinking “I really only thought it was me who felt like that”, and then feel an affinity to your fellow humans in that, actually, we’re kind of all the same. With some exceptions!

Overall, Early Morning Riser is funny, heartfelt, truthful & downright emotional & if you don’t finish it with a tear in your eye, you’re a stronger person than me! All the love!

This book’s description is so deceptive..I expected a funny or at least interesting story about dating and love but this book was sooo slow to start and honestly never picks up. Also, I can’t believe people found this funny I didn’t crack a smile once. The writing is supposedly funny but I found all the characters incredibly self absorbed, annoying, and whiny, particularly the main character. Even the most intense scenes were so lack luster. The only real page turning scene was the birth scene. There is almost zero character development over the course of the book, which is especially ridiculous when you consider it takes place over almost two decades. Jane starts the book desperate for Duncan’s love and attention and even when she gets it, by way of marriage, a house, two kids, and Jimmy, she still seems desperate, insecure, and jealous. She even says “you need romantic love to be happy” and earnestly believes that since we never address it again. She never truly mends her issues with her mother. I don’t like how she’s describes her youngest daughter Patrice. She pities Jimmy the whole book and almost only thinks of the biggest tragedy of his life, losing his mother, in terms of how it inconvenienced her. She doesn’t even love him until the last page. Also she never seems to
find her voice and learn to speak up
for herself. And Duncan never seems to grow up or redeem himself as some notorious bachelor, he’s a good father and friend but he always seems a little grimey and revels in being a serial dater up until the last page (although maybe that’s Jane’s insecurities coloring him as such). Honestly surprised I finished it would not recommend.

Reviews said this was light and funny; I wouldn't use either word to describe the book. It was also a character-driven book, and I prefer more plot. My expectations for a light, fun summer book were not met, but that was based on my misguided choice.

I never could quite figure out the tone.

“I can hear you, but I can't see you." Jane's mother said. "I won't be able to see you until my glasses lighten up."

(A moment of appreciation for authors who depict the art of transition glasses perfectly
