When I started reading this book, I was actually enjoying it, but then I didn’t. I feel like the main character. She was okay at the beginning, but then, I don’t know what the hell happened to her because she started to annoy the fuck out of me. And the whole thing with the brothers was pretty fucked up. I didn't like that. Here I thought I was gonna enjoy and like this book, well I didn’t. Also, there were some parts where it was pretty disturbing.

2.5 stars. I liked this when it was about survival, I started to not like it as much when it slowly became more about who she was interested in romantically lol.
I didn’t think the writing was very strong, and I think a bit more character development would have made this a really good story. There were good and bad bits. Realistic and unrealistic just in general things that happen but overall it wasn’t a BAD read, it just didn’t blow me away and make me want to read more.

Honestly, 3⭐️ is being overly generous. It’s maybe 2.6 or so.
The Plot: Sam has been surviving the zombie apocalypse in her Detroit apartment alone, growing food on her roof, and avoiding a gang of vicious soldiers. One day the soldiers corner her but she’s saved by two bothers (Reese and Ryder) and they agree to leave the city a build a homestead on an island not far from there. On the way they encounter more dangerous survivors and rescue a girl from the soldiers. As they make their way to the island and have a final showdown, love also blooms in the group.
It wasn’t terrible, but the writing threw me off a few times and reminded me of Wattpad a bit. And sometimes the characters did the dumbest things. Like I’m tweaking at everyone barely escaping and then going back for a DEAD BODY!! WHYYYY?
Also the age gap?!? And Melissa worried about if Reese was cute? When she’s 15 and JUST escaped s*x slavery?!? Idk
I don’t think I’m gonna be able to finish this series. Especially after finishing some pretty good apocalypse series, this one isn’t doing it for me.

This is a great book on how to survive if zombies became real. It is also a great book on how to survive almost any human exctintion or disaster. I do a survival lesson with my classes and I usually read them Life as We Knew it by Susan Beth Pfefer but I think I might switch to this book because it might keep an alternative students attention better.
Great job Samantha Hoffman I just read that you are a teenager yourself and an author to several books! Keep up the great work.

I loved this one!
At first, I was a little worried that the relationships/decisions were moving a bit too fast, seemingly without thought, but once the book found its groove I was grabbing for it whenever I could!
I like that this focused more on the the depravity of man rather than the actual zombies (I love books with either!), and feel it was done thoughtfully.
Thank you for the chance to read this copy! All opinions are my own.

Poor writing quality.
Moderate: Rape
This is book one of the Zombie Apocalypse series and the main character is a young woman called Sam, who has managed to survive all alone, as the world descended into chaos with the coming of an infection that spread from bites or bodily fluids being passed on from the infected people who are now zombies. They are fairly docile during the day unless you make a noise that draws them to you, but she has to lock herself away in her apartment at night and ensure no one else finds her safe haven. Due to summers spent with her gran, she learnt a bit about growing food and gathering water, and has used that knowledge to grow a limited supply of vegetables to try and stave off starvation. More people have died from the chaos that first happened and then from starvation, than from attacks by the zombies. She has only a few tins of food left and needs to go on another supply run, but she doesn’t just have the zombies to deal with. There are groups of soldiers roaming the city of Detroit and clearing out zombies as they go, but any females are in danger, as they will grab them and use them as entertainment for the troops, until the females stop fighting back! Then they take them out with them on patrol and shoot them, leaving their remains for the zombies.
Sam almost got caught a few weeks back, when she started going towards some soldiers and a woman they were holding, until she saw them shoot her dead, thankfully without seeing Sam. Even worse are the ex-soldiers who have nothing stopping them from acting out on their animalistic desires, and Sam has had a run in with one such group, led by a large man called Frank, who wants her for his men! She escapes him once, but the next time, she makes a mistake and is caught, until two redneck brothers, Ryder and Reese, end up saving her and another woman who Frank already had and was about to kill. Her name is Tobe (October) and she had given up the fight and was useless to the ex-soldiers, who wanted their women to fight them for some sick excitement! Reese is a bit of a flirt and joker, whilst Ryder as the older brother, is serious and refuses to even crack a smile. With limited food supplies now there are four of them to feed, they try to get more supplies and soon realise they need to head elsewhere. The brothers want to head all the way to the coast, well over a thousand miles, but Sam has a better suggestion. A small place called Beaver Island that she visited on a school trip as a teen. It is more reasonable distance away, but Ryder will need to find transport for them that will hold all of them and what supplies they find. An obvious mistake takes place at this time, as Ryder does his stubborn man routine, his way or the highway, which will come back to hurt them later on!
The journey is fraught with danger, from zombies and other lawless survivors, as they make their way to the island near her hometown. They have difficulties along the way, lose one vehicle and need to find another whilst being pursued, only to find the dock near the island completely awash with zombies. There are plenty of boats, but whether there are any keys in them or if they work, will take time to find out. Time for a diversion and a bit of luck. Getting to the island should mean they can relax a bit, but danger is still all around and winter is coming, so they have a lot to do and may not be alone on the island. Robe isn’t quite up to doing supply runs, but they agree someone needs to stay with her and protect their supplies, whilst the others search for more. Ryder decides Sam should go with him and the other two should stay in the cabin they have taken over. After getting close to the flirting Reese on the journey, she soon starts to get even closer to Ryder, when out together, especially when he made a tough decision to take a detour near her former home. Out on a supply run on the island, they get caught out by a coming storm and the arrival of her worst nightmare! A fantastic start to the series with lots of danger and action throughout, as well as the beginning of good friendships and a possible romance or two. I look forward to reading more of the series and seeing where it goes next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
