Spoiler alert: Couldn’t for the life of me get past those pages with the teacher and the protagonist. Felt so utterly revolted by that scene that I had to physically throw the book away.

Read the trigger warning first. I went into this book not knowing anything oh boy was I in for it. I must say this book is very well written and I think it was a very interesting take on trauma and abuse and how it affects children which then turn into adults. I must say though I am very disturbed by this book. There were multiple times I had to stop listening because it was getting too much for me. I do think all of the parts of the story are important as a whole i understand why some would say not but I thought it really made you understand how horrible this girl was treated and how terrible her childhood was. Her coping mechanisms were interesting but as an 11 year old how else are you supposed to cope with being sexually abused by a teacher and physically and emotionally abused at home. The ending really threw me for a loop. I must say I was not expecting it and holy shit. I don’t even really have words. I would say read this book but I also don’t think I could ever recommend this book. This book was a wild ride.

A total page turner I couldn’t put down. The way the ending just gets more and more depraved/bizarre. The social critique regarding marriage/gender roles/life expectations. The abuse and response to abuse. Earthlings was a really unique read I wouldn’t recommend to those with a weak stomach, but if you’re a fan of unique horror it’s worth checking out.

i literally don’t know what to say. just changed from 3 to 2 stars. i think a lot of the strength in writing might be lost in translation? i don’t speak japanese so it is hard to say
