dark medium-paced

Wonderfully absurd, outrageous, dark, funny, enraging, heartbreaking and totally bonkers!
I’m unable to put my thoughts about this book into a logical sentence, I can only describe it.

Did not like it. Maybe I didn’t get it, but I really didn’t enjoy this book at all. I probably should have DMF’d it but it was short so I pushed myself to finish it. I did not like the writing style, didn’t really understand the plot or message, and just generally felt like it was a pointless read for me. The end was suddenly disturbing in a way that did not make sense, it felt sensational just for the point of shock value. Not for me.

I love this book but also I am disgusted that I loved it. I went in blind and was not sure what it was about. I am glad because if I knew I probably would not have read it. If you decide to read this...check trigger warnings as I was shocked about some of the content.

The author really dives into the human mind and what happens when we are told that we must follow a set of rules to be considered a productive member of society. The story also explores what happens when when trauma from childhood that is left unchecked reaches adulthood.

I actually felt a little ill after finishing the book. I don’t know where I was or what I was doing when I added this to my tbr but I completely missed all warnings for this book. I’ve previously completed Convenience Store Woman and enjoyed it so I guess there was a haze around me when I walked into Earthlings. Despite my emotions brought upon by reading the last chapter of Earthlings, I thoroughly enjoy the personality that Murata creates for her main characters. They are strong willed women who don’t conform to mainstream society. At a young age, Natsuki believes herself to be a magical alien from another planet. I believe that everything Natsuki has been through as a child has lead her to create this delusion as a coping mechanism. I can’t defend what Natsuki does in the last chapter, but I don’t blame her for losing her grip on reality. How is one supposed to hold onto any morals when they’re surrounded by multiple forms of abuse and gaslighting?
