For my past  self, a little girl not allowed to be free spirited and imaginative who loved and adored Eliose's brave boldnes  and for the adult me who would grow tiresome of her antics if I had to take care of her, this is a fun book of the adventures of Eliose!

How have a never read this? Also I guess I didn’t realize it’s been around since 1955!

Eloise annoys me. There was wayyy too much text to keep me engaged.

Definitely a warning against absentee parenting.

Recently my husband and daughter watched the Disney movie "Eloise at the Plaza" while I was at work. I realized that I hadn't read Eloise in forever, so I got it from the library to refresh my memory. I was surprised by how long and rambling it is. I remembered Eloise as spoiled and obnoxious, but I forgot how the text of the book is like stream-of-consciousness poetry. It doesn't feel like it's really for young children. My 7yo only wanted to look at the pictures and pick out certain notable phrases like "my mostly companion."

Does this deserve to be a classic? It's certainly remarkable for the audacity of the main character. She's not really likable, but I have sympathy for her. She doesn't go to school or have friends or see her mother. She is not a rascal with a heart of gold. She is pure id.

In a way, this book reminds me of Lord of the Flies.

Eloise is a six year old girl who lives at the Plaza while her parents stay far away on business. She is extremely spoiled and she gets whatever she wants which is everything. Her nanny tries her best to keep her in line but Eloise is mostly allowed to run free. In one way, the story is very funny and Eloise entertains us all. However, the book doesn't really seem like it's for children--it's more for adults who are feeling nostalgic or who can appreciate children and their whimsies.

Cute (and chaotic!) look into what happens when a little girl is left to her own devices and virtually unlimited money. I've read some reviews calling her a selfish brat, but honestly, what do you expect when a child is basically neglected by her gallivanting mother and left to a less-than watchful nanny who smokes and drinks around her.

2015 review:

Yes, this was a very random read. I just needed a quick break from the series I'm reading, and when I was growing up I loved watching the tv show about Eloise, so I decided to read the book. Eloise is annoying and spoiled, but she's aldo adorable and reading about her made me so nostalgic. This book doesn't even have any good morals, so I'm not sure how good it is for an actual child, but I think they would be entertained, if nothing else.
