What a stunning turning of age story. This will make you think, make you angry and mournful. It is the story of women as told by a ghost. It has historical significance, feminist significance and is still considered a YA tale.
Frankie, her sister, and her brother have been sent to live in an orphanage after their mother died and their father couldn't care for them anymore. He visits on weekend, bringing them treats. Then one Sunday he shows up with his new wife. Soon he's taking her older brother, Vito, and his new wife's kids out of the orphanage to start over.
Story is about Frankie's time in the orphanage and the years after that. Plus she's got a ghost(Pearl) who follows her around while she tries to figure out her death. (This was a good side story, but once things wrapped up for her, why does she stay? and why Frankie?)
After following Frankie and all her disappointments, it would have been good to get a glimpse of her happy and loved.
Many references to wolves - the fox that follows the ghost and even after it is killed which she calls wolf. The wolves ghost girl sees after the asylum. But mostly when ghost girl refers to herself, Frankie, Toni, and wolf as wolves and angels both.

This is my favorite kind of book. The kind that engulfs me so completely that all day all I think about is getting home so I can pick it up and begin reading again. The kind I stay up way too late reading so I can get one more chapter in before begrudgingly placing a bookmark between its pages and turning out the light.
I won’t regurgitate the plot, because the synopsis is above. But in reading Laura Ruby’s notes at the end of the book and finding out the character of Frankie was based on her mother-in-law added another dimension of wonder to the story. Highly recommend.

I listened to the audio book and it was excellent. For teens and adults alike. Bravo Laura Ruby.
A good, but disjointed read. Loved the message, hated the journey.
When I won this book in the giveaway, I thought it was going to be an interesting read, especially since it dealt around WWII. At first I thought it was interesting, but the more I read, the more confused I got with the two different stories going on, the real life of Frankie and the ghost telling the story. I much rather would have read it as a novel from Frankie's POV with what was going on in her life. The ghost telling the story didn't do much for me instead make me confuse as to why it was important. The whole time I thought it was a family member of Frankie's that was the ghost, but I felt it unnecessary.
