The narrator's performance is marvelous. If it was not for her, I might not be able to finish the book as there are a couple of books on my book shelf at this time.
Another very good book by Laura Ruby, author of Bone Gap. I think I enjoyed this novel more. It is set in Chicago during WWII and told by a ghost.
3.5 ⭐
Not exactly what I was expecting. I would've liked it a lot more without the paranormal elements which I thought took away from the main plot-line and also made the ending weaker.
That said, I learned a lot from this novel and though it wasn't an easy read, I appreciated how it didn't shy away from the realities of the time. The author did a great job of making her readers emotionally invested in the events of Frankie's life and everything in me wished I could go back and take away all her suffering. Her story alone was enough to carry this book which is ultimately why I wish it hadn't been cluttered with the ghost narrative. Happy Reading :)

Basically Frankie and her sister wouldn't have been able to escape their abusive household without a ghost's interference. I didn't enjoy this because it felt like the whole book was trying to drive home the idea that the world was against these girls but they were still able to come through stronger which is an empowering message, but there are no ghosts ready to come to girl's rescue today so I just wish that there had been some other resolution without the paranormal involvement if that makes sense. That said, I learned a lot from this novel and though it wasn't an easy read, I appreciated how it didn't shy away from the realities of the time. This book is amazing. I of course loved BONE GAP (Who didn't???) and adored YORK, but this ghostly historical grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let go. You can tell the research that went into the details and the backdrop of this time and place, but most of all it's the stories of these people and their ghosts that shine through. I will definitely be reading this one again.

3.5 stars - loved the many parts of the story, but wish it had either focused more on fewer storylines, or been a bit longer to give each storyline more depth.

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review*
Peral, a young ghost follows the life of Frankie, her sister Toni and brother Vito who live in a Chicago orphanage during The Great Depression, and World War II. After their father remarries, they come back for Vito, but leave Frankie and Toni behind.
I was initially really intrigued by the concept of the narrator being a ghost... but this book was just not for me. I was bored and did not care about anyone or anything going on in this story. I felt that it was incredibly slow and there are so many subplots going on, I quickly lost track of what the point was. I did like the female friendships in this, but that was about all I enjoyed. I just feel that it was a very convoluted attempt at a message about females being lesser than males and how much they struggle.
Not for me, but may be for you!
