A Naomi Novik book wouldn't be complete without a discourse on the inherent inequality of class and economic status. This was hinted at in Book 1 and is highlighted at the end of this one.
I'm excited to see where this goes and what a world of free dragons would look like.

Laurence and Temeraire's second novel is long on world building and short on plot. It's not much of a minus though, with such great characters and Novik's nicely built universe. Still, it's mostly an excuse to visit China and check out some Chinese dragons. I'm on board for #3 even if nothing much happened here.

I only enjoyed this slightly less than book 1 because of the way it shook the bond between Temeraire and Laurence, though I know it was necessary! Was curious how Naomi would make an 8 month long sail to China interesting and yet she absolutely smashed it out of the park. Despite being a long read I wasn’t ever bored.
