I was rather meh on the first book, but I am glad that I opted to continue because I enjoyed this one much better. It was a quick read with interesting themes on cultural relativism, self determination, and friction between friends/allies. Laurence is much more bearable in this book, and Temeraire continues to mature but is still pretty childish. The proposed solution seemed obvious to me from the start, but there were a couple unexpected wrinkles that kept it from being too predictable.

Still in love! The boat ride took WAY longer than I expected, but it was not short of things to enjoy. I love everyone very much and am excited for the next adventure!

- Who will win? Long established and harshly reinforced societal norms that you, as a highly privileged member of said society, grew up with or the radical progressive takes of your dragon that was never exposed to them and is questioning the needless and cruel nature of many rules and revealing the flaws in the system?
- Laurence never stood a chance bc he would do anything for Temreraire anyway
- This book was pretty much more of a transition book with a lot of character work and world building happening (which I enjoyed) but it sets up sm for the rest for the series so I’m fine with it
