At first I thought this was going to be a little boring, but it got so much better! I loved the pictures, and I enjoyed learning more about the U.S. Calvary in WWII, Commander Hank Reed, Patton, Lessing, Podhajsky, and this sad, wonderful and inspiring story about saving the horses! I also love that the author gives the cast of characters in the beginning of the book, and at the end tells what happens to all of them.

I loved this book. It is the story of American soldiers, Austrians, and Germans who worked together to save the Lipizzaner and other purebred horses caught between armies in WW II. It is an amazing and suspenseful story. Some sections were difficult to read because of deaths of people and horses but I recommend this book to horse lovers and readers interested in WW II.

There are right readers for this book but I am not one of them. I found the history of horses during WWII interesting and a part of the war I hadn’t known about. But the details of transport and escape didn’t pull me in. There’s a lot of information here for a work of fiction- extensive back notes and bibliography.
