I went into this book blind because I’m a fan of Brynne Weaver and wanted to give this a shot, but this was just an okay read.

It’s a dark and twisted story with dark and twisted characters that have a tendency to get turned on at the sight of blood. The twist was pretty predictable but it was nice to see it unfold. The chemistry was there, but i feel like it was missing something.

4.5 stars- what an intriguing story. Well written and despite other reviewers opinions, I did feel a deep love connection between Jack and Kyrie and loved the epilogue. When the mystery is unraveled, their shared history is heart breaking. Their solo history is heart breaking. But is makes a beautiful story (with a side of killing).
It would be 5 stars if I had wanted to purchase it to keep forever but it fell short of that standard for me- don't let that stop you!
As with any review I write, spoilers ahead but I didn't reveal the best parts so there is so much more to this story.
I love how the relationship between Kyrie and Jack begins:
“The only problem is, Jack…you’re wrong,” I say, striking out with the last word.
I hit Jack’s chest with a Taser. He lets out a strangled, gritty groan and drops to the dirt. His body convulses in distress as I uncap a syringe with my other hand.
I’ve been waiting for this moment, this look between us when Jack realizes he’s gotten me wrong all this time.
I’ve wanted it since the time he berated me for the notorious CRYO freezer incident in the lab, when he accused me of destroying his tissue samples through sheer ineptitude.
It was the first time I truly accepted that I might have to put my little beast down.
Who’s inept now, you fucker."
LOL.
They are colleagues at the same University and have been at odds for 3 years before things come to a head. Literally, when one of them kills a co-worker to set the other person up.
Its a mystery to unravel too, digging up their history. Also too funny and smart. I like that they are smart. But they really don't like each other after those 3 years:
"Her polished bones would look good displayed on my trophy mantel."
Kyrie sabotages Jack's research trip:
“No trip to Madrid for me this year, I assume,” he whispers.
When I turn my smile toward him, it’s fucking dazzling. “I guess not. Suck my sweet pussy lips, Jack.”
Jack starts to realize what is going on, even if quite late to the game:
"Kyrie’s ability to mask her expression and blend into any environment is, admittedly, impressive. I should have realized this trait beforehand.
So many tiny tells are coming to light as I study her today, and I realize how she even masked herself from me.
It wasn’t hard; my ego did most of the work for her."
I appreciate that they are both open to introspection and correcting their faults. Because if they didn't, they couldn't get away with murder. And they both need that for release, for taking back their power.
Kyrie, her puns are great:
“I’m going to go out on a limb here,” I say, waggling the leg around before dropping it onto the gurney with a thunk."
and Jack, I can't believe he kept his cool after this!:
"Three days. And in that time, I’ve found pieces of Mason in my daily lunches. Toenails in my yogurt. Testes buried in my tofu salad. Entrails in my travel mug of egg drop soup.
When I approached Kyrie to inquire about her antics, her response was: “You said to dispose of the body… Digestion is a fantastic form of disposal, Jack.”

"Colby has gone missing. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts turning up in my salads next."
When Jack finally realizes who Kyrie is:
"Kyrie didn’t start as a killer—she was made. And I helped make her."
and after he starts to fall for her, she doesn't realize it:
“Jesus Christ,” Jack whispers, looking like he’s just run a race and lost miserably, his shoulders slumped and each breath noticeable. He gives a little shake of his head.
“You are the most mercurial person I have ever met. One moment you’re in tears and the next you’re running two hundred miles an hour in the opposite direction without a map or a fucking clue. I don’t even know where to start.”
They have a common enemy, Hayes, to deal with:
“Not to say he won’t come to peep in your windows.” The black door closes behind me and locks.
“If he does, I’ll fucking flay the skin from his face and feed it to him,” Jack says.
“And they claim romance is dead.”
And when Jack reveals his care for her:
"I’ve wasted so much time, Jack said. And now it feels like there’s not enough."
He opens up everything to trust her (lol):
“You haven’t shown me the whole house,” I say, watching the tension ease from Jack’s shoulders as my words settle in. “What if you have a collection of porcelain dolls? I hate those things.”
They get their bloody gory HEA and I would say the most unrealistic part was the situation in the cold room, anal with no lube. She would have been SO wrecked. BUT don't let that stop you!
The Himalayan Blue poppies were a wonderful touch.

This was my first thriller and it wasn’t bad at all. Had a lot of build up and was spicy but I got a little bored in the middle. Their relationship may not be traditional but they make it work and that was worth reading.
