I read this to McKenna back when she was a little rugrat. It was quite cute and it kept both of us interested. That's saying something since we're the ADD mother/daughter team. I hear the movie doesn't do it justice.

2.5, I read this to my younger students and honestly I found the plot a little too scattered for them to follow. Re-reading this as an adult I think that the part with Miggory Sow doesn’t need to be here; the kids were just waiting to hear about the Despereaux plot and all of the middle of the book was kind of boring. However the Despereaux storyline is super cute and I think the book should been much more focused on him and didn’t need so many other characters.

Oh my GOD this book. Very serious things about empathy and family and hard choices and being true to yourself and .... and also meditations on soup. With talking mice and rats. I did this as a read aloud for my 7yo and it was absolutely perfect for that. And the 9yo could not resist joining in, despite knowing the end.
