i enjoy reading abt mouse, soup, and lov!

revisiting fav childrens books is fun

The Tale of Despereaux was a bit depressing but had a satisfying ending. I couldn't believe all of the things that happened to that poor little mouse. I was also astonished at the violence that Miggery Sow's character had to endure throughout the tale. I'm not a huge fan of the making a lot of trips back to past events to describe people and events that have to do with the present. I feel it takes away from the story in the present. I was also not a huge fan of the author speaking directly to the reader. It was jarringly distracting to be constantly lifted out of the story to be asked questions like what perfidy meant. That is why I only gave this book a 4 out of 5. It was a great story but it was the way that the author told it that bothered me a bit. Roscuro was a tragic character and you felt pity for a character that was so conflicted. He desired the light but only knew darkness. This character reminded me a lot of Macbeth and other Shakespearean heroes that were so conflicted in their lives. I really liked Despereaux. He was not a normal mouse and for that he was persecuted by his family and the mouse community but he found it in his heart to forgive all of them and to be himself, no matter the consequences.

What a nice fairy tail, er tale. Now I can see the movie with a clear conscious. Although, I do like the quality of the illustrations in the book, I'm interested to see the new take on the characters.

This one was alot darker than I expected. I would definitely recommend it for older children.

A completely enchanting tale. Kate DiCamillo is so good at her craft. My 7 year old and I both reading this aloud together. A bit fairy tale"ish" with good and evil and a close what falls between those two.

"Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark."
