Oh well, It has been a while and we read this in 2nd grade, but I am just putting all of my books on here. I really found this story really cute and fun. Being young when reading it made it quite a lovely story, and it is one of those books that you just kinda don't forget to easily. Otherwise, it was just really good!!
Very cute, sweet story. I loved the writing style and the little interjections from the author, and the illustrations were great. My only real complaint is how rushed the climax and ending felt--I really enjoyed meeting all the characters and seeing how their stories intertwined, but then as soon as they came together, it just felt so hurried and was over so quickly. But overall, a sweet little book.
This book was DARK -particularly for a children’s book! I mean, it opens up with a mother mouse giving birth to a litter of all but one (Despereaux) stillborn mice and more or less shrugging it off. There’s another character who’s sold by her father to a physically and verbally abusive man for a blanket. There’s talks of rats eating mice alive after they were judged to be criminals. Another note of the darkness in this novel is the art, which was lovely, but also illustrated some extremely dark and terrifying situations.( There’s one page where a mouse looks to be holding a noose that two illustrated executioners wrap around our hero’s neck! )
All that being said, I really did enjoy this book, once I got over the shock of how dark and twisty this book is. There are some great lessons to be learned here (Dark vs. Light , finding acceptance, empathy and forgiveness.) The author did a wonderful job in not “dumbing down“ her writing, as many children’s book authors do. I also loved that the book was broken into several mini-books so you got to read each characters story and see how others actions and reactions affected who they became. I do think this book would’ve been entirely too heavy for me as a child. I am thankful I read it as an adult.

“Stories are light. Light is precious in a world so dark.”
Impatient 7yo had a hard time believing the three POVs would come together. Nevertheless, it got a thumbs up from the kid and a request for immediate re-listen. From an adult's perspective, it had a pretty simplistic resolution.
Oh! I absolutely loved this little book. I picked it up as a read aloud for my children, and my 7 year old was fascinated by the story, to be perfectly honest the 5 and 3 year old where not as interested as I had hoped.
The story follows a little mouse that falls in love with a princess, and it is full of adventure, hard choices, hope, and a above all, love. Seriously a wonderful book with a beautiful message targeted perfectly to the heart of kids, that even adults can understand.
