Lovveeedd ittttt.
I don't think this book can just apply for kids, as an older teen I was able to enjoy this book very much and gain a lot out of it. It's a perfect read for when you just want to relax and calmly read at night (that's what I did lol).
The ending was very satisfying :)
**Although don't expect this to be a top notch book lol, it's a very wholesome book and obviously written for kids :)

I remember my teacher reading this book to my class in elementary school. I loved it so much that when she finished I got the book and read it twice. Its a really big deal to me because I hated reading when I was little.
My favorite quotes:
"You must, when calculating the odds of a mouse's success, factor in his love for the princess. Love, as we have already discussed, is a powerful, wonderful, ridiculous thing, capable of moving mountains. And spools of thread."
"Reader, you must know that an interesting fate (sometimes involving rats, sometimes not) awaits almost anyone, mouse or man, who does not conform."
"'Yes,' said Despereaux, 'because I am on a quest.' The word felt good and right in his mouth. Quest. Say it, reader. Say the word 'quest' out loud. It is an extraordinary word, isn't it? So small and yet so full of wonder, so full of hope."
"Reader, nothing is sweeter in this sad world than the sound of someone you love calling your name. Nothing."
"He was allowed to go back and forth from the darkness of the dungeon to the light of the upstairs. But, alas, he never really belonged in either place, a sad fate, I am afraid, of those whose hearts break and then mend in crooked ways. But the rat, in seeking forgiveness, did manage to shed some small light, some happiness into another life."
"'...unbelievable.' 'Just so,' says the threadmaster smiling, 'just so.' And, reader, it is just so. Isn't it?"

What is ultimately a grand farce is told through multiple interwoven stories whose pathos is perfectly calibrated to the scope of a young reader's fears and sympathies. The narrator's careful attention to the rich symbols which drive the plot make the book a wonderful introduction to literary criticism.
My teacher read to this to my class, and I adored it! It’s an amazing book and it’s super creative. It’s going up on my “favorite book” list.
