I was disappointed by this book. I had high expectations for it. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining, but not fulfilling.

Read aloud to Emma, although with a good number of edits. If I could do it over again, I would have read it myself first. Light verses dark was huge in the book, but the dark was too evil for little kids. The rats in particular were really terrible, but several other characters were cruel as well. I think the movie was quite an improvement on the book.

The world is dark, and light is precious.
Come closer, dear reader.
You must trust me.
I am telling you a story.

Good day to omnipresent narrators, hopelessly romantic mice with hearts of gold, beautiful blonde princesses, envious servant girls, scheming rats, kind thread-masters, imposing cooks, guilt-ridden fathers, mothers who need to chill tf out, and brothers who are just doing their best, okay?!(Furlough doesn't deserve this nonsense)

I'm not saying that Ratatouille ripped off this book, but I am saying I would like to know what Brad Bird was reading around the mid-2000s.

P.S. Seven year old me owes Kate DiCamilo her life

A timeless book that could have been written decades ago.
