Just lovely. Full of wonderful lessons, beautiful characters, and strange lands.

As expected, the book is nothing like, and much better than, the movie. A bit of a stretch for the kids in terms of themes and vocabulary, but not in a bad way.

Not a normal selection for me, but I still enjoyed it. The characters made me react emotionally and even made me feel guilty when I realized I wouldn't have been so empathetic to the servant girl. A great book about life's unfairness, friendship, love, and forgiveness. Would be a great read-aloud in a classroom.

Not so fond of this... maybe it was the reading, the narrator has a very nasal voice and she pronounced the French words wrong and it was really irritating, but... I find Kate DiCamillo's writing a bit hoppy, airy, meanering... she was trying to do a little Edith Nesbit and a little Rudyard Kipling, but didn't quite manage.

Not my favorite Kate DiCamillo book. It's was just a little too dark for me.

I read this novel to my daughter over a few weeks as a prelude to going to see the movie. It is a wonderful, quite sophisticated read aimed at 8-13 yr olds but works well to read to younger children if they have a long concentration span!

My daughter wanted to ensure that I mentioned that Despereaux had really big ears. Se also said that it was a good book because in the end they found the Princess and Miggery was allowed to go back to the farm.

I enjoyed this! But I wanted to love it more than I did. Read it to my students after we had read DiCamillo’s Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane. We all enjoyed it—but The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane has my (and my students’) hearts!

It has been years since I’ve read this book and I still talk about it. Even though my kids are young adults it is one of the books I mention and one of them is now reading it.

This is a book that both adults and children can enjoy. It brings back classic storytelling with an adventurous plot and love-able characters. The writing is so well done and keeps the reader engaged.
