This wasn’t for me. I didn’t hate the premise, but the execution was just… not it. Also grapes are toxic to dogs and when the dog ate the grape I was horrified (but it seems the author maybe just didn’t know that because the dog was fine).
Graphic: Suicide attempt and Murder

When I started this book I was confused and kind of ready to get through it , but it grew on me without me realising until half way through. I couldn’t put it down there were twists and turns . I don’t know how Matt Haig does it he unravels the human mind and lays out all the things you didn’t know you needed to read.

Labeling this book is funny is highly misleading. Likening it to Douglas Adams is a disservice to Douglas Adams. It relies on the same handful ok jokes (humans look weird, humans are weird), and goes entirely too deeply into trying to understand us humans to the point where the story will derail for pages at a time while the narrator philosophises or waxes intellectual. Even with a short audiobook time of 8 hours, it's too long. I realized this one needed to go to the did-not-finish route when a character's attempted suicide barely made me bat an eyelash. I just could not get into it enough to care about anything.

I don't even know if I can find the words to adequately describe how this book made me feel. First off, it's fucking hilarious. I couldn't hold it together reading the beginning of this book. That caught me off guard in a good way, I didn't expect this book to have such a lighthearted tone, but that's one reason why I loved it so much. Exactly what I needed.
Secondly, I love the genius way Matt Haig wrote this. It starts off with this alien whose come to Earth who is very unfamiliar with what it's like to be human. All he knows are the negative perceptions of humanity he was told on his own planet, like that humans are a species of violence and greed, and humans were given this planet and all they do is destroy it. Which I can relate to being in that mindset of looking at humanity, and life in general in a negative light.
But as the story progresses and the alien gets to know different people, he learns to love and care for others and realizes there's a lot of great things to love and appreciate about being human. By the end of this book, I found myself seriously appreciating and being thankful for my own life.
I don't even know if I'm describing it that well, but the way book made me think about things I take for granted and why life is valuable means a lot to me.

“As a black hole forms it creates an immense gamma-ray burst, blinding whole galaxies with light and destroying millions of worlds. You could disappear at any second. This one. Or this one. Or this one. Make sure, as often as possible, you are doing something you’d be happy to die doing.”
