Russian fantasy story with a spunky witch child, a mad stepmother, and a proud but misguided priest. In case you missed the metaphor, the prologue provides you with the fairy tale the whole book is based on. Good story, good characters, plot was kinda linear but that was no problem, biggest complaint is I hate vaguely described evil bad guys. Evil dark forces just don't do it for me! Apparently it is based on a real-life historic period (14th century?), which is interesting as well.
Standalone, although apparently it will become a trilogy soon.

Ahhh, this book was so lovely! It felt like a luxuriously cozy Winter coat; and yes, I know, it's September... but I couldn't resist the pull of this book. And I'm so grateful I picked it up! It's whimsical, it's full of depth and meaning, and the writing is breathtakingly beautiful. It felt like a fairytale with just the right amount of complexity to still be unique and original, and I simply can't wait to continue the series. This book truly was special.

A little slow to start, but other than that this was phenomenal
I liked this book, but couldn't get fully into it. It's a tale taken from Russian fairytales and I enjoyed the sort of slight to religion and blindly following leading to bad things. But some of the characters I didn't really get as they maybe weren't fleshed out enough to help understand their motives. Also a bit of trouble I had with names as they are all Russian, which is fine, but then had like five different nicknames as well, so especially in the beginning it was hard to get into.
