I nearly quit this book multiple times in the first 40% or so but so many people had told me I'd like it that I did keep going and I'm so glad. I did end up enjoying the book and realizing why the author made those initial choices but I think a defter hand could have achieved the same impact without such a heavy first third/half. The dog, the love of her life, the daughter...they got me through. The other characters...not likable, though that was often the point. I look forward to eventually watching the show. I can see how it would adapt easily to the screen.

wish i could give this a 4.9 bc that’s how i feel overall, but this story moved me to tears multiple times and i loved and rooted for the characters deeply. love the themes of science vs. religion throughout, and the many threads that all come together at the end.

Historical fiction, a good casual read but felt a little bit disjointed at times. The characters feel flat (interactions rely too heavily on a certain trait or characteristic), though there is a bit of development which only happens near the end of the book. It feels like there are too many coincidental relations between the characters. The story feels like it's mainly driven mostly by things that happen to the characters rather than a personal exploration.

The message and story are otherwise inspiring and hopeful, even though it gives a glimpse into the not-so-distant ugly past of what it was like to be a woman in the United States in the 50s and 60s. There are some really great zingers in the book as well that got a smile or chuckle out of me while reading.

VERY immersive. Almost missed my stop a couple of times because of it.
sadly, the end is a bit flat
