The Longest Ride

This is certainly not the best book by Nicholas Sparks. During most of the book I felt bored and thought to myself, "Where is this going?" I don't even know how I managed to finish the book. However once I was about 75% through with the book it started to get interesting. I did like how the book ended, but I cannot say much more in terms of how great the book was.

I had high expectations for The Longest Ride. I adore the film, and Ira and Ruth's story struck a cord in my heart the first time I watched it (I cried for so long!). For the first 200 pages, these expectations were happily met. There were differences, but I preferred Luke's character in the novel compared to the film. I found Sophia to be quite similar in both formats.

Unfortunately, around the 250 page mark, I felt that the story began to drag - and it continued to do so for the duration of the book. I think that I would have felt differently had I not watched the movie prior to reading the book. However, having said that, I don't regret watching the movie first.

My biggest issue with the book was that I felt that it worked better as a film. The changes made in the film just worked better, in my opinion. For instance, the way that Sophia and Luke meet Ira was much more enjoyable in the film, and, following on from that, Ira and Ruth's story was told in a much better way in the film. Not to mention, the film ended on a much happier note.

I also had some issues with the bull-riding, because I personally view it as a cruel sport that should not be allowed to continue being practiced.

This was an incredibly rambly "review", but I just have so many jumbled thoughts. Ultimately, I preferred the film and would reccomend that above the novel.

I enjoyed this light read. Predictable plot, but enjoyed the story.

I don't know why I keep reading Nicholas Sparks books. They're all the same and the only differences seem to be how he disappoints us. This book did not fail to disappoint.
At first, I was expecting there to be more of a connection between the two couples even though their stories were decades apart. I was actually hoping the fact that Ira & Ruth collected art and Sophie was an art history major would be a binding factor between the couples, but it really wasn't. That was my biggest disappointment in this book.
Otherwise, it was a typical Nicholas Sparks book. Boy and girl meet, fall in love, deal with crazy ex boyfriend then the past comes back to haunt them and both are faced with difficult decisions about the future of their relationship. Pretty predictable.
I did like the love story between Ira and Ruth. It was beautiful & timeless! I liked their story much better than that of Luke & Sophia.
I will say Nicholas Sparks definitely ends the story with a little twist that binds the two couples together and that made for a strong ending. It was an ending you are hoping for throughout the whole book.
Otherwise, an utter disappointment.

Everyone commented on my BeReal. saying that the movie was good… making me believe the book would be equally as good. I knew the two stories would intertwine in the end but couldn’t predict how. Turned out better than I could’ve predicted!

Once opened I did not put this book down until I was finished. I loved Luke and Sophie. I am going to watch the movie now I have finished reading the book.

2015 review:

I cried a lot in this book. The relationship between Ira and Ruth was so touching, and I loved the way their relationship eventually crossed paths with Luke and Sophia's relationship.
