  • What I liked: The DRAMA, the characterization of Dracula, how hell-bent they were on catching him after he corrupted Lucy,
that Lucy's mother fucked her over by not just leaving her and her flowers the hell alone and opening windows.
The wolves and the bats. The suspicions of Dracula's neighbors and that everyone knew and just said LITERALLY NOTHING.
Dracula throwing the mirror out the window lmao

  • What I disliked: that they equated soft feminine virginal girls with morality and goodness implying that Lucy deserved what happened because she wasn't 'pure' enough. That women were written as such weak little things and that they only got praise when they 'thought like men'. That the story was basically men saving 'women in distress'. That the language was so flowery and annoying to parse through.
  • Overall thoughts: I think I'll stick to modern adaptations because the flowery language was so annoying to get through and I loved how dramatic Dracula was but the characterization of women left a lot to be desired. It was definitely a product of its time and a good story none-the-less if you can overlook the 1 dimensional female characters but it's hard for me to do. The men are well written, rounded out characters that show emotion which is a bright spot in this.

I picked this up mainly as foundational text of most vampire media. There was a great deal more religious content than I was expecting, weirdly, but equally more slightly ridiculous shenanigans. Overall, it was a decent story, and I'm glad to have read it.

It’s a good thing Dracula did not turn Van Helsing into a vampire, because we would have had to sit through his drawn-out monologues for all eternity.

I never had much interest in reading Dracula until I read Frankenstein earlier this year. Much like my experience with that book, I was braced for campiness rather than genuine source material. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I ended up enjoying it.

Told from multiple POVs as well as multiple writing mediums, the story conveys the terrors caused by Count Dracula. A large portion of the book focuses on his victim Lucy and the efforts to keep her out of Dracula’s clutches. The rest is dedicated to the study of the count and the pursuit to put an end to him altogether.

The different writing styles threw me off in the beginning. I couldn’t latch on to the story until it came to scenes with Mina and Lucy. For me, that’s when the story began. Before then I struggled to discern who each of the characters were. I could differentiate Lucy and Mina right away but the men took much longer.

I enjoyed the gothic atmosphere the most. I can’t do modern horror, but I’m finding that I have an interest in some of these classics. It’s also interesting to see the original characters who have since become commonplace in media and more often than not spoofed and made comical.

This is really good, I was surprised, but 'Dracula' reads surprisingly modern and I really enjoy the prose of the journal entries. I'll say the book does fall flat a bit when characters, especially Van Helsing, deliver dialogue in a rather purple-ly prose sort of way that is hard to take seriously at times, does undercut serious moments. Most of the suspense is undercut by popular knowledge that Dracula  is a vampire, but despite back, this enjoyable like any well-crafted story, and as Dracula is more of a tertiary character, that doesn't impact the experience too much (at least for me) as the book is more about these characters reacting to his presence than Dracula himself. Highly recommend, and if you aren't one for horror, I still think this is rather readable and enjoyable, it's not that scary, more a supernatural adventure.

I do not understand why this is a horror. This was not even a bit scary.

The good: Fairly good plot, fantastic characters, strong faith in God, vast knowledge of nations living in Hungary at that time, absolutely amazing use of language, probably the best book in english (language-wise) I have ever read
The bad: Slower pace, plot was repetetive, at times too much information (which we didn't really need), THE END
and the unnecessary death

Now let me divide this piece of literature into parts that I totally made up. We started off fairly strong, with what I like to call "Part I: Castle Dracula". I liked this part, it could have been a bit shorter but I appreciated that we got to know Dracula as a person (if I can call him that).
After that comes "Part II: Boring info dumping". As you can guess from the title, I did not enjoy this part at all. Again, I understand its importance to the story, but still too long.
Coming in strong is "Part III: Lucy". I almost devoured this part. Easily the best part of the book. Characters peaked here.
"Part IV: Plans and debates" did not take us on a wild ride, because it was the same plan repeated over and over again.
Although I appreciate the Mina incident.
I loved that all the characters got together to pull an Avengers move (my head litterally played an Avengers theme in the background).
Now the last part, "Part V: The conclusion". I imagined a lot of different endings. I did not imagine that after a few failed attempts which were supposed to set a tense atmosphere and make us more excited for the grand finale (what I personally found very annoying), one would expect a big finale. But one would be disappointed. This was easily one of the most disappointing endings of a book I have ever read.
