This book reminds me of a modern day, significantly more diverse and realistic Gilmore Girls. Instead of a white girl raised by a single mom who tried to run away from a life of privilege by hiding in a mostly white town in CT, the story follows a Haitian American boy raised by immigrant parents in NYC. And instead of playing at poverty while somehow affording all kinds of luxuries, his family actually struggles with poverty. And instead of rich grandparents that show up with money whenever needed, he's on a scholarship. But he's still got the same drive to live up to parental expectations for Ivy League educations, the same decision to do something both incredibly stupid and incredibly illegal, and the same fear of rejection and failure that puts obstacles between him and his relationships and goals.

Corrine also reminds me a lot of Paris in all the best ways while also being a much more defined and interesting character. Like Paris, I think Corrine ended up being the one with the most character growth. But unlike Paris, her growth wasn't erased whenever the plot needed Henri to succeed. And, also unlike Paris, she didn't lose everything she worked for just because she didn't adhere to purity culture. It was very refreshing to see her develop in a way that both honored her as a character and fueled the plot.

I do wish there had been more time spent with other characters and that there was more consequence for his actions story-wise.
