An implausible, stupid thriller, but a fairly fun implausible, stupid thriller. Kind of like if Quentin Tarantino made a Yakuza movie.

I had a lot of fun with this book. Humorous and infuriating in turn. Isaka, if nothing else, inspires earth-shattering hatred for The Prince. He started off intolerable and only got worse.

Дослушал “Поезд убийц” Котаро Исака. #рецензия

Японский “боевик”: на поезде едут несоклько киллеров, все с разными мотивами. Одного повсюду преследуют неудачи, второй — подросток-психопат, третий — алкаш, и так далее. Большую часть времени они ходят по поезду, обуждают всякие философские вопросы, и убивают друг друга. Это было бы скучно, но книга интересно построена: повествование ведется от лица разных персонажей, и действие в разных главах происходит параллельно друг другу. Это создает хитрую запутанную структуру сюжета и сильно добавляет динамики. Повороты сюжета всегда неожиданные и изобретательные.

Мне не очень понравился вся философская часть — она довольно банальна, это звучит как классический Тарантино, только скучнее. Явно на это делается упор в книге, но я не нашел ничего необычного или особенно интересно завязанного с сюжетом.

Мне понравилась общая атмосфера напряженности и некоторой мрачности, понравился японский антураж (я редко читаю японскую литературу). В целом, неплохо написано, хотя ничего особенного. Русский перевод и начтика тоже довольно удачные, явно сделано с уважением к материлу.

По книге сделан клевый фильм, который я недавно посмотрел, и это мне сильно помешало насладиться книгой. Это не тот случай, когда фильм лучше (скорее наоборот), но он почти дословно повторяет книгу, за исключением пары вариаций в персонажах и концовки. ПОэтому все сюжетные повороты были мне известны, так что интрига была полностью потеряна. Плюс персонажи в фильме мне показались более интересно сделанными.

Итог: мне скорее не понравилось. Книжка короткая, так что я не жалею, но можно посмотреть фильм и этим ограничиться. И книгу, и фильм точно не стоит.

I wonder if I would've enjoyed this more if I hadn't seen the film adaptation first. Bullet Train is a rapid page-turner that's chaotic and fun. It has no trouble juggling a diverse cast and linking multiple perspectives together, but I expected a much more exciting climax. The story builds and builds, and even though the ending scratches the itch growing throughout the book, it feels disproportionate. I didn't expect to enjoy the film adaptation more, but Bullet Train is definitely worth a read if not just to see how they're different.

The movie was so much better I can hardly believe it. The book was shockingly anticlimactic and for once the extra details that comes with being inside the characters heads was cumbersome instead of enlightening. Still a decent story, though
