“They had followed him of their own volition to this remote outpost - to mitigate the risk of contagion, escape the hysteria gripping the city, live out the last days before their extinction. The choice hadn't seemed irrevocable. Then they found themselves on an island, surrounded by water, stripped of any possibility of leaving.
They're never going back.”

adventurous dark mysterious fast-paced

Weird climate horror that would probably appeal to people who like Jeff VanderMeer's Annihilation. I enjoyed the writing style but there was some very graphic animal cruelty that felt unnecessary and added almost nothing to the story.

A slim, disquieting volume absolutely dripping with style: wet, humid, damp, and mossy. An opaque ecological force is frothing at the edges of sick rivers and slithering under the skin of once-human bodies, blurring boundaries between old and new. The warm eggs of our undoing are incubating in ten dizzying vignettes that capture the omen of malady, the fragility of our biology, and the disorientation of climate change. Light on plot but soaking with mood and somatic language—to be devoured in a heatwave or thunderstorm.

This is an extraordinarily poetic book about a world that is so familiar and unfamiliar and fabulous (though not in an enchanting way) (though there is a "sinister" enchantment here). I listened to it on audible but bought the book because of its extraordinary beauty: font, cover, lettering, plates and incredibly disconcerting progression. Yes. If you are arrested by the cover, buy the book and prepare yourself for a ecosplendor of a truly awesome scope. Spoiler: Humans are fauna too, just as you suspected. Oh and mutate. Mutate.

I hadnt been reading much during Covid and then this. What a reentry.
