I was in the mood for something fun, and a comedic apocalypse weirdly fit the bill. In this story, a group of holiday resort guest are pre-apocalyptically segregated in different buildings and it sets the tone for how the drama is going down: not so bad for the rich people, not so great for anyone else. And from there, it’s all just a slippery slope.

Despite the fun I had, this was clearly written by a man, because the only prominent woman character was flat; somehow the personality of the person our MC is on a holiday with, his life partner, is outshined by several random guys on the resort (but at least she’s stunning, beautiful, etc right?). Luckily, Dan and Mara worked on their chemistry as the story went on, and that definitely helped relieve some of my annoyance on this part. In a similar vein tho, Alan’s husband Charles was categorised as a “wifey” and on that front the stereotypes and heteronormativity dripped off the pages.

So let’s just say this succeeded more in plot than it did in characters, and although I will always prefer it the other way around, I did enjoy this read. The pacing wasn’t perfect (there was a lot of going around in circles on what to do and the violence escalated quickly), but the story comes together like a puzzle and it was definitely entertaining - the satire was funny!

Funny, vacation, apocalypse book, those descriptions don’t normally all go together but that’s exactly what this book is. I loved the warped sense of humor mixed in with an excellent description of humanity at its worst. I highly recommend!!

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.

This book was so much fun. The entire cast of characters felt like real people and the book was both hilarious and heart wrenching. Highly recommend.
