Probably a 3.5. I'm a little torn. This was an entirely new venture for me. I've never actually read Christian Fiction, and that may be what made it so bizarre. It was an odd read...but I think it was quite good? It's kind of like rating a Christian movie. It needs to have it's own scale.
The only thing knocking down my rating a bit is the slow build up. Whether or not it was necessary isn't clear to me at the moment; it took me too long to read the first 150 pages.
All I can really say is there was mystery, suspense, and action. I cared about many of the characters, marked some favorite quotes and excerpts, and even got a bit teary eyed. And I do believe this book has had a positive impact on my faith. What more can I ask for? Maybe on a different day, this'll be a 4 star rating. Guess it depends on my mood.

The story is solid. It's very thought-provoking and enlightening when it comes to how we think of spiritual warfare.

I had to really trudge through this book. The subject of demons and angels is one that I usually love to read about but the Fundamentalist Christian slant of this book just turned me off. I found it disturbing that other religions were put into such a negative light and found only to be bad (demonic work); especially Eastern meditative ones.
It's a Christian thriller/conspiracy theory sort of book. It's a bit dated and that is distracting. But if you can get past the dated-ness of the story, it's definitely entertaining. I might recommend reading it more quickly than I did (it was dragged out for me over a couple months, so I think I lost some of the momentum that might otherwise have built). :)
Briefly, it's about a small town that has big problems developing, with its university, the local newspaper, and a small church at the center of the conflict. Families are torn apart, lives are ruined and ended, and nothing is at it initially seems. The pastor of the local small church (there is also a big church) and the owner of the paper, separately and in their own lives, try to get to the center of what is happening that is ripping the small town of Ashton completely apart, and both find their own families, jobs, and lives in danger.
I liked a lot of the imagery of demons and angels, and I thought the spiritual group was well written and interesting (spiritual in the sort of new-agey, collective consciousness sense). It is certainly thought provoking, if nothing else.

Wow, I get it now. Why this book is such a big deal. It's incredible to see the way angels and demons act just beyond the veil and how prayer affects everything. Highly recommended.

Good story and since I knew what I was getting into (Looking at you [b:Mind Invaders|587007|Mind Invaders|Dave Hunt|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347325163l/587007._SX50_.jpg|1748998]) I could enjoy it for what it was supposed to be. Still don't buy into the whole you meditate and are possessed by the devil, but I can accept that there probably is a spiritual battle going on.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4. I just couldn't connect with the characters. The book didn't draw me in like Peretti's book The Oath did. Maybe my expectations were too high because of that or who knows! I might have to read the actual book. Maybe it was the audio that didn't cut it for me.
