Ugh! I had high hopes for this book based off of others recommendations and love for this book. Although this book started out great, I could not get passed the redundant and repetitive descriptions of the author. It was really driving me insane. I thought the writing was dreadful. Very hard to follow without any real structure in the storyline. Under developed characters and very very cliché. Now, I understand the premise of having a fiction story written from a Christian's perspective on spiritual warfare, but it should not lack world building, plot and character development like other novels that aren't in this genre.
Unfortunately, I will not be continuing the series since this book put me in major reading slump.

My go to book on spiritual warfare. I've probably read it about 7 times. I buy copies to hand out to friends and family if they want to understand prayer and spiritual warfare better.

"I understand that sometimes the truth of God’s Word can become a divider, an irritation, a stone of stumbling. But that’s only because it remains unchanged, uncompromising, and steadfast. "
I read this book around 8 years ago. I decided to pick this up as part of my rereading project because I remember loving book. Reading this was really heart warming, for I remember all that I loved about it. But it was also disheartening, for I can now see all the things wrong with this book.
This book has an interesting portrayal of angels and demons. I really like how we get to see from the angels and demons perspective. It's different from any other books I've read. I enjoy the different POVs as well as the weaving of the character plots together. I felt like we had a really deep plot.
The downside in this book was that it was obvious that the 'good guys' were going to win. I would have really liked to see one of the 'good guys' that was struggling give up. Yes, GIVE UP. It's more realistic and it would add some flavor to the story. The writing was all right. The characters were a little bland.
Overall the main point in this book was the same. I still enjoyed this book despite it's shortcomings.

I really enjoyed this. I loved seeing the side-by-side action of our world and the spiritual realm, and the places where they interacted closely. I enjoyed the characters a lot, but sometimes the dialogue of the human characters didn't seem… realistic, I guess. Some events seemed a little the same, but then, I haven't come up against that much blatant demonic possession and all of that that these characters did. So maybe it is like that. I don't know.
I also loved the visuals of the angels and demons. You can feel the darkness of the demons, and the light of the angels (I found this especially so in the climax). I found it really fascinating to see how each side in the spiritual realm interacted within their own ranks. Where the angels respected each other for their triumphs and skills in battles past, the demons fight with each other as much as they do with the angels. They have no qualms about mocking or killing each other. The angels, on the other hand, support each other and watch each other's backs.
And can we talk about how awesome Guilo is? :3 Easily one of my favorite characters.

Another book from the Great American Read. It's OK.
I don't even know where to begin with this book. The characters were two-dimensional, the angels and demons were unbelievable, and though this claims to be a Christian book, there is very little mention of Jesus. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
Somehow things look pretty different when you grow up. As a kid these books seemed very exciting. Now after having spent a couple months recapping this one, I am amazed at how boring and ridiculous much of it is and how poor the storytelling and world building skills are. And I am disgusted and horrified by the amount of sexual assault used as a poor plot device, not to mention just how revoltingly it is used.
Poorly executed propaganda and very little more.

4.5 stars - A re-read that I definately enjoy as an older reader. Its got though provoking moments and brilliant characters. I do not agree with all of the views presented in this book, in fact some elements caused issues, hence why it has lost half a star. Peretti can write really good, atmospheric and even horrific books, it is a fun read that is predictable but the journey to the end is fun. Would recommend
