Strengths
The late-autumn, almost gothic Victorian atmosphere was well done.
The pacing was good, each chapter the correct legnth for what it has to say.
The discussion of propriety vs liberty that defines Signa's arc was not profound, but it fit the YA public.
The characters were more complex than I first thought, but I don't think the book used it as a strength.
The prose was good, bar a few cringey dialogues with the MMC.
Weaknesses
The characters were waiting around for death, not one of them using the agency their status gave them. They were sitting ducks while Signa did everything.
The plot-twists were catastrophicly done. The last 10% of the book took my suspension of disbelief and immersion, and threw it in the pits of hell. I had 3 potential suspects in mind (Charlotte being the highest) , and the actual murderer made less sense than all 3 of them. Combined.
The book fails to get a good conclusion, and fails to pursue a good romance. The plot-twist of it didn't make sense either, but more concerning was the grooming, which I could excuse in the first third of the book, but as Death's influence was revealed to bevery heavy in Signa's life (when she was a baby, he saw how beautiful she'd grow up to be, and dictated her life from then on??), I couldn't stomach it anymore.

A solid, interesting read. The only real issue I had with the book was Signa's utter stupidity when it came to men, which can be excused by her age and is somewhat resolved by the end of the book.

This FMC was like if Bella Swan and Nancy Drew were combined, in the best ways. I enjoyed our strong willed, naive, and clumsy main character discover herself as well as the murderer. My only complaint is there were situations that were life or death and we sit down to have tea? Slightly irritating, but it all comes tighter in the end!
