This book was laugh-out-loud hilarious. I embarrassed myself at work multiple times because of this but I don't care. The writing was so funny and the banter that the boys had was perfection. I'm already looking forward to reading more from this author.
The whole book was really well done. I loved how it focused on the boys' flaws and how they both helped the other to be a better person. It was wholesome and endearing to watch them grow together and fall in love.
I also really loved the depiction of depression here. It was never outwardly stated that Luc had depression, but it was clear in what was shown to us and after so many books that told me everything, it was really refreshing to read one where the author trusted me to know what was happening. And she didn't just show it in his melancholy or his panic attacks about the media, but also in his surroundings - his very messy apartment and his distancing from his friends. I felt like it was a very accurate depiction of the mental disorder and I loved seeing that representation on the page.
Again, I'm very much looking forward to another book from this author as well as the second book in this series.

4.5 stars

This was such a cute, amazing journey of finding yourself, of romance and of me making bad decisions to binge read this until 5am in the morning (really, I tried to stop reading many, many times, but I failed). It made me laugh so hard and brought me to tears, it was great.

Only thing I'm docking off .5 of a star is that I feel it finished too abruptly :( I feel like a nice epilogue or at least just a little more would've tied it up better

This book is everything I wanted and needed. The sexual tension is so good! I just wanted them to kiss! I also love the other characters, like Luc's mom, friends, and coworkers.

Editing to add that the dynamic between Luc and Alex reminds me of Nick and the sloths in Zootopia and Rhys is Pricilla in that exchange

So cute, and so funny! Too little spice for my liking, but still a good book.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was fun and quirky. I liked seeing the profession of Oliver and luc’s relationship and how it went from being fake for PR (jumpscare from that term alone) to benefit their careers and reputations to being something real, and Oliver softening up. Also, seeing Luc’s character progression from having trust issues due to betrayal in past relationships. He still felt scared and made mistakes but decided to fix them and make things right rather than give up and let his anxieties take over completely.

However, the pacing felt a bit too slow and dragged on at some parts. Enough talking about beetles please. There was definitely too much time dedicated to that damn beetle charity. And I felt like so many of the characters personalities were merged into one and they all had the same traits and kookiness, especially luc’s friends. At times they annoyed me and it just felt unrealistic and reminded you that it was fiction. But despite this, Boyfriend Material was a still an enjoyable fake to real queer life story.

I imagine Luc gets better at some point but he's genuinely so unlikeable in the beginning that I can't keep reading
