Luc and Oliver are a hilarious time. They’re both messed in their own way, and fake dating forces them to grow and confront their issues. The writing is so amazingly witty and British it’s a blast to read.

“Are we really bad at this?” I asked. “We’ve been fake dating for three days and we’ve already fake broken up once.”
“Yes but we fake resolved our difficulties and fake got back together and I’m hoping it’s made us fake stronger.”
🎸Chaotic gays, fake dating, and peak Tumblr energy. reads like a gay Bridget Jones’s Diary, complete with a stuffy English lawyer and a completely unhinged love interest. Total opposites attract.
🥖 Loads of parallel pop culture references from peak tumblr era, including welcome to night vale.
Loads of niche fantasy publishing drama from Luc’s friend, Bridget.
🪲 The banter is excellent, in a conversational tone much like your funniest friend recounting their romantic disasters over brunch. Bonus points for favorite romance tropes: fake dating & Only one bed.
🦔 Minor pet peeve: why so many breakups? It started to feel a bit rinse-and-repeat near the end. Including some conflict that isn’t a break up / resolve would be more impactful.
🍺 I ordered the next one immediately. Boyfriend Material was the perfect balm after Red, White & Royal Blue—less spicy, a little more fade-to-black, but just as emotionally satisfying.
“None taken.” Of course Oliver wasn’t taking offence. Oliver was an angel. While I was a slime demon from planet Jerkface.

This may be my favorite read of 2020. Hilarious, sweet, soulful, by God, healthy! The prose is so funny, and vivid, and spot-on perfect, I found myself marveling over numerous lines. Aside from Lucien and Oliver being such wonderfully flawed, human, and relatable characters, the supporting characters like Lucien's mother, his friends, and his coworkers are all rich, adorably quirky, and well-drawn, making every scene a delight. I will definitely be reading more from Alexis Hall.
