Luc is desperate to find a boyfriend. If he doesn't start dating someone respectable and pull his public image together soon, his vaguely homophobic boss has informed him he will be out of a job. The trouble is, ever since his last boyfriend sold the story of their relationship to the press five years ago, Luc's been a bit of a mess. He's always been a bit of a mess, actually--ever since his rockstar dad ran out on him and his mom when Luc was a little kid, leaving Luc to deal with stalker-ish tabloids that have put the worst possible spin on every moment of his life. So when his best friend proposes he start fake dating Oliver, who is effortlessly gorgeous and a successful lawyer, Luc has no choice but to agree, even though Oliver has made it clear he deeply dislikes Luc and that he's only agreeing to this charade because he's desperate to have someone to bring to an upcoming family function. But when fake feelings start to feel real, Luc and Oliver will have to decide if they're willing to fight for each other, or if they're going to go down in scandalous flames.

If I could rate this book six stars out of five, I would! Witty, funny, lighthearted, and sweet while also  touching on some really serious issues and being really emotionally raw, Boyfriend Material is easily one of the top books I've read this year. I was so enjoying it, in fact, that I finished the whole 13-hour audiobook in under a day. The character dynamics were all excellent and felt really realistic, from Luc's sarcastic but loving friends, to Luc and Oliver's steadily growing determination to make boyfriending work out for the both of them, to Luc's complex relationships with each of his parents, to the insidious familial criticism that shaped Oliver into the overwrought, anxious perfectionist that he is. With two big subversions of the typical romcom-style plot--neither of which I saw coming!--this book was fantastic. I'm actually cancelling my next planned read to dive straight into the sequel!

A good romance, but i wish it had been more pining and less were both fucked up, this is how bad.
Oliver is 10/10.
Lucien is 10/10 and in the fist half of the book I related to him a lot, but then he just kinda got better? Because of one relationship with one guy, which peaved me a bit.
Overall good, but needed some editing I think.

I don’t usually like the fake dating trope. There’s nothing wrong with it, its just not for me. But with all the love for this book, I figured why not give it a shot, nothing to lose.
But there was a lot to gain.
Instead of being full of the classic miscomunications and overblown drama, this book was. So fun. Yes, they had their issues, otherwise the book would have probably been less than half its length, but none of it felt like issues for the sake of padding out the book. It all felt real and accurate for the characters.
The writing was great. Each character was so unique, and Luc’s POV meant hearing all of his hilarious thoughts.
Very excited to read the sequel.

DID NOT FINISH: 4%

Writings not for me. I don't like first person, and wasn't a fan of the very casual chatting to a friend tone (3 swear words in first 3 sentences?) or the things people said (did not feel like real people).
