I really enjoyed Ruin and Rising and although I have small issues with the ending, I loved reading about the characters (particularly Nikolai. Surprise surprise). My feelings towards the Darkling's character from the beginning were that I thought of him as creepy and possessive and let's face it he still is. But towards the end of this book, he grew on me. I especially loved seeing the connection between him and Alina and learning more about his past as Aleksander. I practically fell in love with Nikolai and now just cannot wait for King of Scars. Every time he spoke I couldn't stop grinning and I just wish Alina had chosen him I'M SORRY. I am conflicted about Mal. He was a good enough character and I honestly did not see that plot twist about him at all. However, I just couldn't ship him with Alina at all. Page after page they were arguing or moping after each other and it's just my least favourite type of relationship. Tbh I wish he'd stayed dead lol

this was FINE, it was basically all I could have expected from the way the first two books have gone- I thought the plot stuff was interesting mostly but i thought the love triangle stuff was mad, mad boring- at least Mal stopped being a DICK all the time but it does read a little bit like the camera stopped pointing at mal and alina for 3 months in between books 2 and 3 and they became totally different people. in the like star wars opening crawl there's "when the boy was banned from seeing the girl" and i was like really? these same people? i feel like if that had happened in book 2 we would have heard about it for like 4 full chapters. i thought nikolai was a better boy but also it is simply so obvious that the reader stand-in chosen one girl cannot end the series as the queen of the country.

the macguffin plot twist was good, SOME of the feelings conversations were good, i liked it when alina was able to Appear to the darkling in the manner he did. reylo wants what darklina has. the first like 60% of this DRAGGED but once they stopped being in a cave for some reason it got better. in conclusion: i'm glad i read this series to have context for what I'm sure people are going to be talking about once the netflix show comes out. i read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom like 3 years ago and i remember it being better so I might re-read that too but i'm going to read some books for adults first

Turns out full circle. I feel like I needed more, The darkling was so much I feel like I didn't get enough but still it was a fine turn of events.

Best one in the triology. The plot and the twists (even though there were hints for some) were so good.

I started rooting for Mal in the start and that put me in a dilemma. Mal couldn't be with Alina until she loses her powers and I didn't know how that could happen without destroying her brain.
The ending was perfect.
Darkling's death was done in the perfect way.

Thank the Saints (🤭) Alina didn't end up with Nikolai. And thank the Saints he didn't die. I liked his character but there was literally no romantic connect between those two.

not as bad as book two.

A great conclusion. This book has a really nice balance of plot and character development.

The way this story started off wasn’t my favorite but I liked seeing the growing bond and relationships between the characters of Alina’s alliance. It was complicated and heartfelt.

Then, once the plot and action kicked in, I was hooked. There were betrayals, twists, and reveals that had me completely immersed. The stakes were so high and several moments broke my heart.

In the end, the story came full circle in such a satisfying way. There were high and low moments throughout but overall I enjoyed this series!

This was my favorite book of the series! The overall ending & wrap-up was satisfying & not entirely predictable, so I'm happy that I stuck it out. I still didn't really like the main character & there were a few plot points & pacing issues, but it was a quick read & I found myself wanting to know what happens.

In Ruin and Rising, weakened and in hiding after a devastating battle, Alina must gather the remnants of her followers and locate the last amplifier to challenge the Darkling once and for all. As betrayals and sacrifices mount, she faces an impossible choice between power, love, and the fate of Ravka. In a final confrontation, Alina’s ultimate decision reshapes the future of magic and the country forever.
