This was the hardest to slog through of all the Heinlein books yet. I genuinely wasn't sure I could finish it. The first half or so of the book is his typical do-it-alone tough guy, bossing around his family in their early stage survival after nuclear holocaust. The second half is after they are picked up by an existing civilization and realize they are on the unexpected end of a racial slavery dynamic. This book has not aged particularly well. Although I do think there are some interesting takeaways from the inversion, they are buried under so much racist and misogynist bullshit that it was hard to get any benefit.
