This was absolutely delicious. Amazing writing at every turn, every sentence was perfectly crafted. There’s so much to think about afterwards…and the audiobook was beautifully narrated!!

banger beginning, then it lost me in the middle and then I enjoyed the end again
not sure what it was, overall the style is solid but somehow it didn't hook me as much as I would want to. interesting story, but soo many questions stay unanswered and I can't even say if I care about the protagonist or not.
I'm torn between 3 or 4 stars tbh, but leaning towards 4 while probably not reading the following books and taking a dive into the Southern Reach Wiki

I was going to rate this slightly higher but then when I went to log this I noticed I had read this 5 years ago (nearly exactly, with the previous reading within a month of this one) and didn't remember doing that at all, so perhaps this wasn't as memorable as I thought, or maybe I just didn't connect with it as much the first time around. I have become a much bigger fan of VanderMeer in the interim and wanted to catch up on this series to read his fourth novel, so I will definitely continue and perhaps get a bit more out of the subsequent novels.

THIS IS SO COOL!
I’ve never really read sci-fi or horror books and I think this is such a good intro into the genre. I wanna know everything about this world🤩🤩🤩
I loved the writing style; I usually have a hard time staying on the same page with the author in terms of visuals, but it felt like it really was left to the reader to decide what everything looks like/how it all breathes!

For seekers of haunting questions, those who enjoy eco-horror and a story of what the earth could become when it stops recognizing us. Unsettling and uncomfortable in the best way. Thought-provoking. Clever and steady paced.
Good fit for fans of T.Kingfishers "What moves the dead" or Silvia Moreno-Garcia''s Mexican Gothic but laced with much more scientific curiosity and a heavier helping of dystopia
